Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has awarded a contract for the supply, construction, installation and commission of a 400 kilovolt (kV) substation with related works, worth AED 197 million, at the Hassyan clean coal power plant. This is part of DEWA’s efforts to increase the capacity and efficiency of electricity and transmission networks, in adherence with its vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility.

“This project supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to provide 7% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020. It will increase this target to 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050. DEWA is working to achieve the fifth pillar of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which focuses on creating an environmentally-friendly energy mix, with 25% coming from solar energy, 7% from nuclear power, 7% from clean coal, and 61% from gas by 2030, to make Dubai a global centre for clean energy and green economy.

The project will upgrade and expand the 400kV electricity transmission network, by connecting the substation with current electricity networks. DEWA works to build world-class energy infrastructure that meets Dubai’s development demands. The main 400kV power transformer at Hassyan clean coal power plant is part of DEWA’s ongoing efforts to achieve its ambitious strategy and plans, to deliver the highest standards of availability, reliability and efficiency,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“To achieve DEWA’s strategy and development projects in electricity transmission, DEWA continuously develops its electricity services by working to expand its projects, services, and facilities. DEWA’s future objectives are to increase the efficiency and accountability of its infrastructure, to actively contribute to the economic growth and prosperity of Dubai,” added Al Tayer.

The Hassyan clean coal power plant is based on the IPP model, and will generate 2,400 megawatts (MW). The plant will be fully operational by March 2023. This is the first project of its kind in the region, and will be developed to the highest international standards.
